Factors for School Closures & E-Learning Days

Dear Momence Families:

Momence CUSD #1understands that our decision to open or close schools in bad weather has a big effect on our families. It is always a difficult decision whether to send students to school or not during inclement weather. Our top priority is the safety of our students.

Please understand that we make the decision to open or close the schools in bad weather based on a careful consideration of all factors, such as:

  • Temperature and wind chill
  • Information on road conditions
  • Amount of snow and ice accumulated
  • Weather predictions
  • Building and parking lot conditions
  • Communication with other school districts in the area

During periods of heavy snow or freezing temperatures, please listen to the local radio stations or visit our District website as we post updated information. A Teacherease telephone call or email will also take place with information concerning school closings. If you have not received one of these messages, check with your school to update your information.

These are the radio stations used by Momence CUSD #1 for official announcements regarding school closings:

(WKAN 1320 AM, WXNU 106.5 FM, WVLI 92.7 FM, WFAV 95.1 FM, WIVR 101.7 FM, WYUR 103.7 FM, and WGFA 94.1 FM.

We also contact TV stations WBBM (Channel 2), NBC (Channel 5), ABC (Channel 7), WGN (Channel 9), and WFLD (Channel 32).

These radio and TV stations will be notified as early as possible on days when school will be closed.

Also, if weather conditions worsen, we cannot reverse our decision in the morning without endangering students. Once we make the decision to open the schools, many parents rely on this information to plan for the day as they leave for work. If we then send students right back home, many will return to unsupervised bus stops and empty houses.

With weather being unpredictable, it is sometimes necessary to cancel school early. We will make every effort to keep students in school for the remainder of the day, but with safety being our top priority, conditions may dictate the need to have an early dismissal in some cases. We will give adequate notice to all parents. Please make sure your contact information is always current.

You can contact the District office at 815-472-3501 if you have questions or need further information.  Thank you for your continued support as we make these difficult decisions.
